Interview #639

I feel like I'm on a reality TV show lately; each day ends with me shaking my head or laughing till I breakdown in tears 😂😭. We have spent a little over $200 in posting online job ads in the last 2 months. I was so hopeful, at one point, when we received over 40 applications in a two day period. I wanted to be cautious and really sort through the potential resumes to find the right fit, so I reached out to seven people on a Monday morning and booked five interviews for the very next day. All five candidates wanted afternoon time slots. All five candidates were unemployed. All five candidates asked that I text them our exact business location. All five candidates seemed really excited (except for one who was sleeping when I called at 11am). All five candidates decided NOT to show up.

I went back to my original list of 40 applications (minus the five resumes I figuratively burned to ashes), and I called EVERY SINGLE ONE. Each person was asked a few questions pertaining to the job... Could you carry a treadmill or an elliptical up/down a flight of stairs with some assistance?... Are you familiar with tools like Allen keys, wrenches, sockets and screw drivers?... Do you have any experience with putting things together by following instructions?

One guy said he was very interested and would love to come in for an interview (he even agreed to a 9am time slot!). He called me the morning of the interview and asked to reschedule for 1pm because he was called into work (he had a job at a restaurant). I was fine with that, but then he called at 11am to ask if he could come to the interview in his gym clothes because he wouldn't have time to change after his workout. 2:30pm rolled around and I sent him a text; he said 'I'm on my way'. The interview was ok and even though he was super late with no explanation; I still offered him to come back and meet the team. We said our goodbyes and I went to the bathroom; when I walked back out, I saw the guy standing outside the front door. I asked him if he needed anything, he said 'I'm waiting for my Uber, my Mercedes was repoed last week'.

This post is taking waaaayyyy too long to type and as I relive these situations, I am second guessing going back to work this week. Here are the highlights in point form:

  • Someone asked for a payday advance on his first day

  • Someone asked to borrow my jacket because he forgot his

  • One guy interviewed for an hour and half, hardly spoke, mentioned being married and having 4 children, was (at the time) unemployed and told me he needed to speak with his wife about the job position. 'They' would let me know 'their' decision by the end of the week

  • Someone asked me to blow in his ear because something was crawling around in there

  • One guy said he was good with tools but didn't know a screw driver from a wrench

  • One guy argued with us about his pants falling below his ass (while onsite at a delivery)

  • One guy failed to bring a lunch - EVER - he drank Gatorade and Bang alllll day long but no food

  • Someone showed up 5mins late on his second day and when we called him out on it, he showed us his watch to prove he was on-time

I have greatly reduced my expectations and now my preliminary questions are... Can you wake up in the morning, in time to start work for 8:30am? Do you drive and/or have reliable transportation to get to work? Can you stand for longer than 30 mins without needing to sit down/take a break?

We have one guy starting tomorrow (please pray with me that this one sticks 🙏)

I also booked an interview with a college kid who got his roommate to call me for the same position; they both want to carpool and interview together (God help me, I hope this isn't like the scene in Step Brothers 🤦🏽‍♀️)
